Summary

The research project presented in this Special Report investigates whether the fracture toughness theory, well known in steel mechanics, can be applied to paper, and more specifically, to newsprint breaking propensity. This theory has already been comprehensively tested on a laboratory scale in the static mode at the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada, and attempts have been made by IFRA to compare the results of the laboratory method with industrial newsprint break statistics.
